BRAVO! | Acceptance Speech of Charles Ferguson, Oscar Winner of Best Documentary Feature for Inside Job

Inside Job – Oscar Winner Acceptance Speech

“Forgive me, I must start by pointing out that three years after our horrific financial crisis caused by massive fraud, not a single financial executive has gone to jail, and that’s wrong.”

The video above is Charles Ferguson’s acceptance speech from the 2011 Academy Awards for winner of best documentary feature for “Inside Job.”

Inside Job

From Academy Award® nominated filmmaker, Charles Ferguson (“No End In Sight”), comes INSIDE JOB, the first film to expose the shocking truth behind the economic crisis of 2008. The global financial meltdown, at a cost of over $20 trillion, resulted in millions of people losing their homes and jobs. Through extensive research and interviews with major financial insiders, politicians and journalists, INSIDE JOB traces the rise of a rogue industry and unveils the corrosive relationships which have corrupted politics, regulation and academia. Narrated by Academy Award® winner Matt Damon, INSIDE JOB was made on location in the United States, Iceland, England, France, Singapore, and China.

INSIDE JOB Official Trailer

This film attempts to provide a comprehensive portrayal of an extremely important and timely subject: the worst financial crisis since the Depression, which continues to haunt us via Europe’s debt problems and global financial instability. It was a completely avoidable crisis; indeed for 40 years after the reforms following the Great Depression, the United States did not have a single financial crisis. However, the progressive deregulation of the financial sector since the 1980s gave rise to an increasingly criminal industry, whose “innovations” have produced a succession of financial crises. Each crisis has been worse than the last; and yet, due to the industry’s increasing wealth and power, each crisis has seen few people go to prison. In the case of this crisis, nobody has gone to prison, despite fraud that caused trillions of dollars in losses. I hope that the film, in less than two hours, will enable everyone to understand the fundamental nature and causes of this problem. It is also my hope that, whatever political opinions individual viewers may have, that after seeing this film we can all agree on the importance of restoring honesty and stability to our financial system, and of holding accountable those to destroyed it.

Charles Ferguson, the founder of Representational Pictures and the director of Inside Job, is a filmmaker, writer, and political scientist. A native of San Francisco, California, Ferguson obtained a B.A. in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1978 and a Ph.D. in political science from M.I.T. in 1989. Following his Ph.D., Ferguson was a postdoctoral researcher at M.I.T. for three years, focusing on interactions between high technology, globalization, and government policy, and frequently consulting to U.S. government agencies including the White House staff, the Defense Department, and the U.S. Trade Representative. Then from 1992 to 1994 Ferguson was an independent consultant to high technology companies including Apple, Xerox, Motorola, Intel, and Texas Instruments. In 1994 Ferguson founded Vermeer Technologies, a software company which developed FrontPage, the first end-user Web site development tool, which he sold to Microsoft in 1996. Subsequently he spent several years as a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and a visiting scholar at M.I.T. and U.C., Berkeley.

In mid-2005, Ferguson formed Representational Pictures and began production of his first film, No End In Sight: The American Occupation of Iraq, which premiered at the Sundance Festival in 2007. No End In Sight won the Special Jury Prize at Sundance, the Best Documentary prizes of the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics circles, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary. Ferguson has authored several books including High Stakes, No Prisoners: A Winner’s Tale of Greed and Glory in the Internet Wars, and Computer Wars: The Post-IBM World (co-authored with Charles Morris).

  1. Peter Baxter says:

President Obama the slave of Wall Street. Why?

Put simply bad debts where sold as triple A investments when people who sold them knew they were bad debts. They insured themselves against any loss. Paid by the borrower, and they pocketed all the money paid out by the insurance companies for the subsequent losses.
This is the biggest scam in the history of the world.
No one has been brought to Justice for this their punishment was to be rewarded with tax payers money and massive bonuses.

An estimate is that these Bankers spent over 10% of their considerable incomes on vice including drugs and prostitution and this was all paid for by their companies on company credit cards and I think if the serious crime squads worldwide seek the truth we can still get some justice from these crooks remember it was tax evasion that brought down Al Capone.

President Obama came to power promising to bring these villains to justice so far he has just reappointed the people who were in financial power under Bush and it is just more of the same.

President Obama has become the slave of Wall Street. Why?

  2. John says:

Saw a congressman I think on TV yesterday say they should tell the truth that they all are in the banks pocket.
He said the banks and mortgage companies give millions to the politicians accounts so don’t expect any help from them. They owe the banks and now they want to collect.
If anything, expect the laws that are now helping us to be changed in their favor.

There was a woman on there that had written a book about just that. I came in late and didn’t catch who it was.
WE may have them for a while, but I expect them to come out with laws that correct their fraud (mistakes as they call them) and once again, they will win. History shows they always have.

    Quit trying and give up?
    NO, NEVER!

  3. Katheryn says:

That, unfortunately, is the world of corporate America. They should throw out ALL of the politicians as most are just sell-outs. The world today is all about money. How much and how fast can I make it and I don’t give a rats ass who I step on or over to get more more more. It is not about companies making good profits and taking pride and care in keeping good employees. They don’t care, just bring in the next one. There are no morals left, no integrity either. The name of the game is a population of HAVES and HAVE NOTS. The HAVES do not have to follow rules and laws; those things are left for the HAVE NOTS. Sad, Sad, Sad but oh so true.

  4. cherry Jale says:

Whatever needs to be done to dunk these creeps, needs to be done. But all I hear is talk. I have railed and rallied and written and spoken out and I feel defeated. I was dumped twice by corporate America and the 2nd time by the company whose CEO was bilking funds and having extra marital affairs, breaking the very laws he forced us all to live by. Whilst he was raking in the billions, people at my level (40k-50k/yr and working our asses off) were being slandered, libeled, misrepresented and stomped upon in order to make it look like our performances were low so that they could throw us out. I only wish all perpetrators of my fate (I count about 6-8 all told) were imprisoned for discrimination, maltreatment and misrepresentation of performance. I would count it one of the best days of my life.
I cheered and screamed when Charles Ferguson spoke up at the Academy Awards. The movie was horrifying but everyone in this country needs to see it. Folks with clout like this man really must step up to save this country. I will never be the same again after my experience nor will many who lost their homes due to foreclosure.
I used to be a kind and thoughtful person. No more. I want to see all these crooks, clods and a.holes fry.
I also am very disappointed in Obama and hope that he is only sidestepping some of his promises to keep the peace with his new “workmates.”
Everyone needs *good* healthcare, a job that keeps them in a house with food, heat and air conditioning, the ability to care for their kids and to have a decent life. If we continue to allow the rich to rule, we will have no middle class left. Jobs need to come back where they belong, right here, let us get on our feet and then we can help others out. If we don’t apply our own oxygen masks, we can’t help others.
Again, you can rail all you want but only action will accomplish anything.
    What can be done?

  5. Congratulations Mr. Fergurson, please go for Inside Job 2, I believe it should be about the Banks that are well known of doing Forged notes, lost notes, intentional destruction of notes, unauthorized people signing mortgage assignments or endorsing notes, missing documentation, fraudulently fabricated documents, different plaintiffs foreclosing on the same property, plaintiffs who do not exist, illegally breaking in to homes and the inability or refusal to provide proof of purchase and/or ownership of the promissory notes.FORGERY, FILING FALSE DOCUMENTS INTO GOVERNMENT RECORDS, EXTORTION, AB– USE OF PROCESS, FRAUD ON THE COURTS, and countless others of CRIMINAL VIOLATIONS
That will great part two documentary !

  6. Katheryn says:

It WAS, It IS and It WILL always be about MONEY and POWER. Far too many can never get enough or have enough no matter how much of ENOUGH they have. We have all been conditioned and brainwashed to believe “White Collar Crime” is acceptable. Just keep shifting the focus like a the talk….and nobody will realize what the hell hit them…until it’s too late!

  7. Officer of the Law says:

WOW!!! That is a really strong indictment of the banksters!

It’s too bad that all of the prosecutors are on the banksters’ payroll.

  8. This is so disgusting…people have held to much trust in the government for way to many years…today is the ‘reward’ (sarcastic) for being good citizens and following the ‘orders ‘ and believeing the government could/would do no wrong for America. The past 10-15 years and longer.. history tells it all. Can’t people look through the problem or issues and see what was told as they spoke with fork-tongue to the citizens? WAKE UP AMERICA….do you think millions of foreclosures were something the people WANTED? Don’t think so..the plan was set back many years ago for America to fail…FOOD will be the next to be taken over by the same ‘gangsters’…that will be the final straw.
No handcuffs…no prison..does that not speak for itself? Where is our government on this foreclosure massive crime? Does that not tell you something is corrupt? Where is HomeLand Security..making big bucks doing shit..when this country is being ‘hit’ by terrorist right here in this country…where is HLS??? HLS is the government…that is why no division of the gov”t has come to the forefront….they are all involved along with the banks..the complete financial industry…wall street the criminals who got huge bailouts…another fraud. The citizens got NOTHING….Notice in Obama’s State of the Union speech…a complete farce….nothing mentioned of the foreclosures and no jobs to be had . that was not important….Obama went into shit that meant nothing to the issues now we face…who is he kidding?
Clinton, Bush and Obama need to be in front of a jury of citizens who have been harmed with their sneaky crap that all have pulled. Money talks and money walks right into their accounts…bribes..a felony..and this goes for all in Washington. Lobbyist live everyday in Washington..passing the bucks from the financial industry..Did Obama say in his campaign he was going to stop the lobbyists? Sure he did. A complete lie..he is a bed partner with the whole mess of criminals. Remember his speech in Germany..WE, THE WORLD, are ALL going to be the NEW WORLD ORDER…no borders on this earth….meaning everyone will be controled under a dictatorship….WAKE UP AMERICA……IT”S HERE AND NOW…..These documentaries are nonfictional…they are the FACTS…to provide with or support by documents. The documentaries are not made to be a entertainment to enjoy…they speak the truth of what this nation needs to know and to WAKE UP….Stand up, speak up, pass the word, America needs every citizen to be heard… NOW..

  9. Jason Werner says:

We do not have a television and rarely even watch movies (too sinful) on the computer. I’ll be sure our family watches that one.

    Thanks to Jesus,
    Former Banker
(processed and wrote loans for nearly all the banks (criminals) mentioned in the trailer)

  10. MAGGIE SIMI says:

  11. dandiener1 says:

Today, I will send an e-mail to the Clerk of my county’s Superior Court, telling him about the film “Inside Job.” I have already met him and talked with him about the MERS circumvention of Property Records recording fees and the resulting cloud on title of all property that was sold or re-financed and had had MERS named as a mortgagee and nominee in the closing papers of the affected loans. I found out from him that nearly every clerk in every county of our state has been upset about MERS and their activities for nearly a decade.

I encourage everyone who really cares about their community and the value associated with “clean title” to individually owned private property, take the time to find out who your county clerk is and contact him or her to ask that they consult with their local sheriff and county commissioners begin actions to right this fraud, reclaim lost fees and local taxes, convict and jail the culprits, and confiscate their ill-earned assets.

If those who lost money in Bernie Madoff”s Ponzi Scheme have the right to seek justice, imprison the con artist, and have an individual appointed to confiscate all assets that can be traced to his crime, every individual whose property and credit have been lost to this fraud should have justice meted out and restitution properly directed by honest judges.

Oh yes, if there is a way to get a DVD of the Oscar-winning “Inside Job” sent to every county clerk, local sheriff and county commissioner and district attorney, that should be done immediately!

Don’t be fooled, they ALL know the truth. They are more interested in what WE know. What terrorizes the criminals who robbed America and keeps them all up at night is our knowledge about what they did. The people in our local and State Government have been reduced to mere — USEFUL IDIOTS by the secret societies that are holding America hostage, and continuing the financial extraction, Nazi class warfare terrorism on America. RAMPANT FRAUD+ RAMPANT CORRUPTION=BANKRUPCY of AMERICA. This has to stop. Wake Up America. We are all hostages on board a runaway train headed for complete destruction. These criminals have STOLEN all of our wealth and hidden it in overseas bank accounts and are have been investing OUR WEALTH in other countries and their currencies. What these useful idiots do not understand is that they will be going down with the ship along with all of the rest of us if these criminals are left to go unpunished for their crimes against humanity. If these crimes go unpunished and America continues on this path of covering up and kicking the can down the road, for the elite robbery of our wealth, America and the world will very likely experience a Great Depression the likes of which have never been seen before in history. There will surely be a financial Holocaust in America and those criminals will never feel an ounce of the pain for their crimes. They are trying to leave us holding the bag for their crimes and that will eventually BANKRUPT AMERICA and the World.. Who does not get that right now? STOP VOTING for all of these these idiots. They are ALL CORRUPT.

      • OMG….what does it or what will it take for the citizens of the country to wake up…where is the backbone to stand up and speak loud and clear of the corruption, the massive criminals and crimes that is smoothering this land….nothing from Washington…that alone proves corruption runs very deep. Does this mean We the People need to police this land …HomeLand Security sure the hell is not doing it….and the terrorists are on this land. The terrorists are the people we HAD trust in and they abused that trust. Does that not put fight into the blood stream? Fighting for our country and land is not a crime…it is our given right. Why are we in wars far from America..when a war is going on here…a war to keep our country as America…the land of the free…and home of the brave. We need to demand answers from the government as to where the hell they all are when this country is being beaten down by criminals. Is it the BIS in Basel, Switzerland that is behind all the world is experiencing? That is the ex-Nazi Bank…but it is not a bank..a ‘club’ where money from ‘certain ones’ and countries hide their money….look it up. Well worth your time. The foreclosures are planned to make everyone jobs…nothing. That is why no indictments or charges have come to surface…it’s the plan.

      • l vent says:

@Marilyn Abdilla: It is a scheme and a NWO plan to bankrupt America and the world. The fascist Nazi elite want a world of proles all working for spit while these pigs sit on their whorepile of wealth. When they ultimately bankrupt America and the world they will bring in their one world dictator like Hitler who will control the world. They want to spread our wealth around the world and build up other nations while our nation crumbles. They want every country to be exactly the same with the same currency and the same pay and mountains of debt to pay to the one world Government. We would never own or control anything. We can’t let this happen to America. Time for the people to organize before the U.N. starts throwing us all into the fema camps..

  12. Hope... says:

    Love it….

  13. l vent says:

I am very happy to see this Documentary film Inside Job win an Oscar. Maybe this will begin to bring this whole PONZI SCHEME robbery by the elite and perpertrated by Wall Street, the banksters and our own CONgress and the injustice it has brought to the good, honest, hardworking American people. to the forefront . This should be the main topic of conversation on mainstream media everyday until all of these criminals are indicted, brought to trial, heavily fined and imprisoned. Every American should see this documentary. Many people still do not realize the scope of these crimes , the extent of the fraud, and how it has effected not only America, but most of the world. People still do not realize that the economy is in the dunk tank because of these criminals and people have lost and are still losing everything because of this PONZI SCHEME? How could it be possible that these criminal’s are still walking around doing business as usual? Blankfein, Paulson, Geithner, even the Bush Admin. hands are dirty. The FBI blew the whistle in 2004 to the Bush Adm. and they did nothing. What many Americans do not understand is that NO ONE is safe when corruption is still so rampant in America.

  14. Katheryn says:

There needs to be constant coverage from reporters and journalists everywhere in order to get the American public to wake up and smell the coffee.

I think most of it is too deep for the average person to take in and digest so they put it aside and prefer to ignore it. I really believe that if enough coverage exposed the very basics on how this fraud has hurt individuals and their communities specifically, people would start demanding more facts.

    Here is one example:

A community that is cutting back on school programs, teacher layoffs and paycuts, are shown how much money was lost as a result of banks not recording transfers and assignments through the use of MERS, would be something they understand that directly affects them. This would spur interest to learn more and consequently, or hopefully, would spark interest to try to learn more and have a better understanding of how serious this is. It just takes that first spark to start a fire! We need constant coverage in every state, city, town and county pointing out the specifics in layman’s language to get sparks started all over. Most of the press coverage out there is just too complicated for the average person who is extremely busy with their day to day lives, to take the time to learn about world economics. Get the press coverage out there that affects them individually and as a community and we will then start to hear the roar of the lions.
