State lawmakers ask for federal probe of foreclosure fraud fighters ouster

by Kim Miller

Two Florida lawmakers are asking for federal help in investigating why former state foreclosure investigators were abruptly dismissed in May.

Rep. Darren Soto, D-Orlando, and Sen. Eleanor Sobel, D-Hollywood, sent letters dated yesterday to U.S. Senator Bill Nelson and Attorney General Eric Holder at the U.S. Department of Justice asking them to review performance evaluations for the two ousted investigators and determine whether further action is required.

The letters follow Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s request for an independent investigation of how her office handled the forced resignations of June Clarkson and Theresa Edwards.

Bondi said Tuesday she has her own concerns about the lack of documentation regarding why the two were told in May to resign or be fired.

Edwards and Clarkson released a statement detailing what happened the afternoon of May 20 when they were called into their supervisor’s office and given the ultimatum.
