Job Description

MEDIA RELATIONS DIRECTOR

Qualifications

Education

BA/BS Degree in journalism, English, communications, public relations or related field, or equivalent combination of education, training and applicable experience.

Experience

10+ years in media relations, corporate PR or journalism, with experience communicating about the financial services industry, housing or mortgage industry preferred.

Responsibilities

The Media Relations Director will:

  • Serve as a media spokesperson for MERSCORP, Inc. and Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems, Inc. (MERS)
  • Draft and manage the approval process for press releases, statements, letters to the editor, opinion-editorial pieces, biographies and other external corporate documents;
  • Facilitate and monitor responses to routine media inquiries;
  • Suggest opportunities for media briefings and editorial board meetings and assist with scheduling and preparation;
  • Assist with preparation of senior staff for media interviews and external presentations;
  • Manage and create editorial content for the corporate website;
  • Manage and/or assist with other projects as assigned.
  • Identify proactive communications opportunities to help advance strategic messaging and support the corporate mission;
  • Assist with the development and execution of overall communications and PR strategies for the companies;
  • Coordinate with vendors, technology staff, and internal content owners to ensure that web content is accurate, appropriate, current, and consistent with external corporate messaging objectives;
  • Recommend, develop and manage a social media plan appropriate for MERSCORP and MERS;
  • Act as back-up for the Vice President, Corporate Communications, and/or Communications Manager, as necessary.

Job Requirements

Requirements

  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in financial services, housing or mortgage industry preferred
  • Existing relationships with business and financial reporters; or demonstrated ability to develop and maintain working relationships with members of the media
  • Ability to analyze, interpret and communicate about business, financial and legal issues, with particular emphasis on mortgages, mortgage servicing and foreclosure
  • High degree of professionalism and ability to interact comfortably and credibly with corporate senior leadership, representatives of MERS® System member organizations, vendors, consultants, and reporters
  • Ability to react quickly and demonstrate poise in a crisis situation
  • Experienced media spokesperson, preferably with on-air broadcast and print experience
  • Demonstrated ability to write effective news releases, statements, web content and other collateral materials
  • Solution-oriented approach and ability to generate new ideas for effective communications
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and in an unstructured environment
