Protesters rally against foreclosure bill

Unemployed Sarasota construction worker Woody Ryan has been fighting foreclosure on his house for nearly four years, arguing the bank never presented proper documentation.

The experience led Ryan to get involved with groups that advocate for homeowners in the foreclosure process, and brought the 65-year-old to Tallahassee Thursday with nearly 100 other activists to protest legislation they believe strips away legal protections for people in foreclosure.

“This bill would diametrically change the paradigm against the homeowner,” said Ryan, who passed out fliers as other activists chanted and held signs behind the Capitol building.

Gathering under gray skies and a light drizzle, the protesters came from across the state to rally against House Bill 213. Many were affiliated with homeowners’ rights groups that have sprung up in the last few years as Florida’s foreclosure rate spiked to among the highest in the nation.

Speakers included foreclosure bloggers, activists and lawmakers opposed to the legislation, which attempts to speed up the foreclosure process in Florida, where the average case takes 676 days compared with a national average of 318.
