I Will Stand Up For You If You Stand Up For Me

I Was Silent When They Came for You … So There Was No One Left to Help When They Came for Me

First they tortured a U.S. citizen and gang member
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a criminal

Then they tortured a U.S. citizen, whistleblower and navy veteran
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a whistleblower

Then they locked up an attorney for representing accused criminals …
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a defense attorney

Then they arrested a young father walking with his son simply because he told Dick Cheney that he disagreed with his policies
I remained silent;
I’ve never talked to an important politician

Then they said an entertainer should be killed because she questioned the government’s version of an important historical event
I remained silent;
I wasn’t an entertainer

Then they arrested people for demanding that Congress hold the President to the Constitution
I did not speak out;
I’ve never protested in Washington

Then they arrested a man for holding a sign
I held my tongue;
I’ve never held that kind of sign

Then they broke a minister’s leg because he wanted to speak at a public event …
I said nothing;
I wasn’t a religious leader

Then they shot a student with a taser gun and arrested him for asking a question of a politician at a public event …
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a student

Then they declared that they could label U.S. citizens living on U.S. soil as “unlawful enemy combatants” and imprison them indefinitely without access to any attorney …
I remained silent;
I didn’t want to be labeled an enemy

Then they declared that they could assassinate U.S. citizens living on U.S. soil without any due process of law
I remained silent;
I assumed I wasn’t on a list

Then they threw political dissenters in psychiatric wards
I remained silent;
I didn’t want to be seen as crazy

When they came for me,
Everyone was silent;
there was no one left to speak out.

Inspired by the poem First They Came by Martin Niemöller, which was written about the Nazis.

I originally wrote this poem in 2007. I have updated it with additional verses as current events have unfolded.

I Will Stand Up For You If You Stand Up For Me was originally published on Washington’s Blog

    The mainstream media is non responsive. They are still protecting the crooks. Any American who questions anything is made to sound like a crazy conspiracy theorist. That’s why people are shutting them off. People are starting to realize too many things do not make sense, and they are getting a snow job from the MSM.

    This is brilliant and thorough. Kudos to the author on Washington’s Blog.

    It is grim testimony of what is going on in this country today. When Obama signed the NDAA, that took away habeas corpus, the whole counrty – left, middle and right – should have created such a din that they would have withdrawn that facist law and gone into hiding. But, there it is, folks. We must ask ourselves why we just stand there and let this happen? And also what are the proponents trying to do? What is their end game? (A facist dictatorship is the most obvious answer.)

    When various Departments of the government are stockpiling huge amounts of ammunition (which cannot legally be used in war), it should be cause for alarm and action. But, here we sit.

    When Occupiers are clubbed and beaten for peaceful demonstrations, and laws are enacted to felonize protest in areas where the protestors are completely unaware that it applies to them, such as in an area where a CIA official is located – we should resist en masse. Our First Amendment rights are only a sweet memory.

    Not only is our Bill or Rights fragmented, but the whole U. S. Constitution is at risk.

    One could rightfully ask “What will it take to spur our action?” Are we already beyond the tipping point?

    So true we all need to stand up for one another and until this sinks in and becomes a reality for all instead of just a few this will continue to happen to all US citizens.What is wrong with people?They act like taking a stand against all that is going on is asking too much.They are scared and have been brainwashed into believing we can’t do anything.Believe people when they come for you and your beliefs maybe then you will wish you had paid attention and they will come like bugs out of the woodwork.Please listen,pay attention,if you don’t all is lost.United we stand divided we fall.

    It’s an outrage HSBC Bank USA hasn’t had its U.S. banking licenses revoked for money laundering.
    I will never keep silent.
    Bank crime shouldn’t pay.
