“Please Take Me”
One of the most heartbreaking sides of the foreclosure crisis is the separation of people from their pets. The fortunate among us are able to take our pets with us when we’re forced to move. Others find a temporary home for their animal friends until they can be reunited again under better circumstances. Sadly, some are left with no choice but to say goodbye to their pets and find them another home.
I dedicate this poem to my two beloved golden retrievers on their 9th birthday. Their love and loyalty has made my road far less difficult.
“Please Take Me”
I sense you’re worried
What will we do?
Please think of me
It was my home too
I remember my training
How you taught me to “stay”
But now I’m willing to leave
As long as I go your way
Now I choose you
Like you chose me
Let’s face this together
Please take me
When family and friends
Were in short supply
I comforted you
Never left your side
We’ll find another place
With a roof and four walls
But you can never replace
Your friend with four paws
They can take away a home
Not memories
We’ll make new ones together
Please take me
Bent but not broken
We can start anew
I can sleep anywhere
If it’s next to you
I dream of a new place
With a yard where I can roam
We only need each other
To make any house a home
You provide care and shelter
I give love and loyalty
Things are bound to get better
If you’ll only take me

Great poem; I have 8 furry babies – Mom, Dad and their 6 pups – ‘octopups’ I moved 3000 miles into my house from CA just to keep them together under the same roof – we fight for them as well – the kids and pets take the biggest blows in these foreclosure bouts – where in the hell is the law and leadership in this country – it certainly isn’t in any neighborhood I know of . . . thanks to the author for sharing this sweet rhyme. . . perhaps the damn purina dog chow companies and pet supplies should start making donations since PETA, etc. are of no help. . .
I too will be forced out of my home soon, with two cats and a dog. All rescued. I unfortunately live in a development that has seen so many abandoned cats due to the foreclosure crisis. I have taken to caring for five, they all seem so scared and alone. I cannot imagine ever just opening a door and telling my babies to fend for themselves. Some people simply do not understand that animals can feel love and safety. They feel stress and fear. I would rather live in a box under a bridge than have to be separated from my four legged babies. I beg you if you see an animal abandoned help it! No one, not even animals, should ever be made to feel that they are somehow disposable.
I had to move back to my parents home, because of my 2 dogs. I have not been able to leave for an apt. because of the fee’s that are part the rental process for animals. It is so sad, but I am lucky in a sense to be able to still keep my dogs
awhhh GREAT poem TY!! and this is really what life is about… unconditional love, and I do love my little and big pets, wish I could take them all that are no longer in loving homes.
what a beautiful poem and tribute to your babies.

Yes, our pets are definitely affected by forecclosures. Looking for a place to rent with destroyed credit was hard enough, but finding a place that allowed pets was even harder. My pet cat loved our home, and we had to move I noticed a change in her. She became very depressed and hide under the bed. She was a very healthy cat up until we moved. She passed away within 6 months and I know it had to do with the move. Her heart was broken along with mine. This is a wonderful poem, thank you.
