New Jersey: Big Banks Make Bad Neighbors
The house across the street from you got foreclosed on in 2008 and now it sits vacant. The windows are boarded up. The lawn has gone from green grass and flowers to patches of garbage and mud. This should be a nice neighborhood, but one neglected house can make it feel like a disaster area.
You’d move, but that house has driven down the value of your house, which, unlike the bank that owns the house across the street, you’ve maintained beautifully. You paid your mortgage. You’re a responsible citizen. Why is the bank punishing you and your neighborhood? Doesn’t the bank have the same responsibilities as a homeowner as you do?
There are people, many of whom are our elected representatives in Trenton, who believe that corporations should be treated like people. If so, the banks that foreclose on these properties need to act like human beings and become better neighbors. Good neighbors take out their trash. Good neighbors work to keep their streets safe. Good neighbors don’t blight their neighborhoods.
