You should get a water filter and a rain barrel. I got a rain barrel at Home Depot, but you can also use a food grade plastic drum with a lid, if you have a cheap source for them. If you buy one, spring for the thicker, larger rain barrel, the thin 48 gallon Fiskars one is too fragile under the weight of all the water that would be in it, and has to be on a perfectly flat surface or it will crack. (guess how I know)

If you put in about a cup or even half a cup of bleach per 55 gallons or so of water (a whole barrel) it will keep the guck from growing. Otherwise it will start to stink eventually. Then take water from your barrel, first pass it through like a T shirt or something to get the leaves and tidbits out if you need to, then put it through a ceramic drip filter. The water filter could be a Big Berkey, but those are expensive, so you can get a Just Water filter (I believe both Cheaper than Dirt and Monolithic sell them), and then attach it per instructions to two 5-gallon buckets with lids, from HD or Lowes.

Www.alpharubicon.com has an article where this person made a crude filter just to keep leaves out of their water barrel using a short section of hanging gutter and a short length of sewer pipe, with a cleanout trap in the bottom. It looks inexpensive.

Potassium permanganate, which is a purple powder, will kill off anything in water. If you are going to treat drinking water with it, you only need a very small amount so do some research as to how much is the right amount. Don't ever ingest the straight powder. I think it might be better than bleach to keep around because even bleach that is never yet opened will lose strength over time. But bleach is OK if you have nothing else. You can also put a few drops of bleach in any stored tap water you might want to keep around.

To re-use 2-liter soda bottles makes sense, because they're stronger than the milk-carton water jugs, and a little kid can lift one easier.

For me, the primary reason I'm looking to buy a house is to have the freedom to fortify it for just such events. For example, backup generator + batteries, solar, water capture and storage, ground loop heat/AC, frozen water chilling (freeze water into ice at night, then use its thaw to chill air during the day), and appliances that are efficient enough to be powered entirely off-grid in a pinch. Adding all that to a piece of property you don't own, and that you can't easily move to a new rental, doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

(I already have a year's supply of dried food, and a month's supply of drinking water in my rental house)

Spot on,concise and to the point. This is exactly what our parents tryed to prepare us for.If you were raised by depression era people then you know the saying "a little to boot".Our parents and grandparwents knew at some point this could become an eventuality for us and what we would need to help us through it.These people had it going on cause they figured out the government and banks took them and would try for us next.Sounds paranoic but it's the truth.People just didn't believe,It would always happen to someone else not them.Well folks here we are now and trying to pretend it will go away won't work.Gather your supplies and families and by the grace of God maybe all of us can survive this if we just learn from our mistakes. The fox is truly in the hen house.

Good advice, George....since many are from third or developing countries they will probably do better than most...but Armageddon is a fact, the time is reserved for those who are lead by the Holy Spirit. Many are preparing already. Fema is ahead of the game...LOL...but not for us I would imagine....add a magnified glass tot he list for solar heating and cooking!!!!Good ole boy scouts training should also come in handy,

The Bible says that in the last days a piece of bread will be able to buy a piece of gold...go figure....and that we will be able to buy milk without money etc....

But you are on track...it will happen...and happening in some areas already...thanks for the info...
