Fort Lauderdale police union withdrawing from Bank of America

Public-sector unions are miffed about proposed legislation that would ban automatic dues deductions from paychecks, and Fort Lauderdale’s police union is striking back.

The Fort Lauderdale Fraternal Order of Police will close its accounts with Bank of America, union President Jack Lokeinsky said Tuesday, citing the bank’s political contributions and membership in the Florida Chamber of Commerce, a business group that has pushed for the deduction ban.

The bills have not come to full floor votes yet in the state House or Senate, and passage is uncertain.

Lokeinsky said the union will close four accounts that totaled roughly $750,000 in annual activity. He also urged union members to close personal accounts with the bank.
