Brooklyn Man Kills Sister, Wounds Niece in Eviction Fight
An elderly Brooklyn man allegedly shot and killed his sister yesterday when she tried to evict him, law-enforcement sources said.
William Thurmond, 70, was taken into custody at the East Flatbush house after he allegedly gunned down his sister and grazed his niece at around 10 a.m., the sources said.
Thurmond was taken to the 67th Precinct station house in Brooklyn where he was charged with criminally negligent homicide.
Investigators believe the bloodshed was sparked when Carol Lovell, 63, and her daughter, Crystal Birk, 37, tried to evict him for not paying his share of the rent, the sources added.
The women, who live upstairs, confronted Thurmond in the basement, police sources said.
They argued, and Thurmond allegedly shot Lovell in the chest and grazed his niece in the head, law-enforcement sources said.
Lovell was pronounced dead at the hospital. Birk was expected to be released from the hospital last night. A firearm was recovered at the scene, cops said.

house not worth a life but anger and passion makes even responsible “gun owners” lose their cool and use a gun to kill, if readily available. In Memphis this week a gun owner took a nap and left her gun accessible to her 4 year old child who shot and killed himself. We will always have those people with us, responsible and irresponsible gun owners that have accidents.
I am a believer in gun rights and ownership [for you and me] but I don’t know about nuts likeThurmond. Of course this is an eviction story but if Thurmond had a multi-clip assault weapon he might have mowed down everyone in sight. Mental health nor background check may never capture the impulse killers that reside inside anger and passion but maybe better laws and assault weapon control will stop the Sandy Hook, Gabby Clifford and theater killings from killing so many people before someone can stop them?
