Since the fall of the USSR, the plurality or majority of American People have said that we need to pull our troops out of all allied nations. The vast majority, >90%, were opposed to bank bailouts. The majority of American people want the wars ended in Iraq and Afghanistan. The majority of American people want Social Security and Medicare cuts off the table in deficit discussions. The plurality/majority of American people are opposed to Obama’s health care plan, with fully half of them angry that it didn’t include single payer.
The majority of Ohio voters (~60%) want to defeat the anti-union bill being voted on today but $millions have poured into that election in the last few weeks from shadowy groups while voting has been limited by the Republican administration. Will the outcome of today’s vote represent what the people want?
If we lived in a democracy, rather than a kleptomaniac oligarchy, those popular views would be expressed in government policies and legislation. Instead they are ignored.

It sounds like you “replaced” my Daddy and (during the Cold War) did your time looking across the Iron Curtain. I don’t know if you ever had the opportunity to get to know the German people in “Free West Germany” but Dad’s memories of them began what I consider my “love affair” with Germany.
Daddy was remobiized in 1962.. about the time that the Stasi in East Germany began buiding the Wall around the “Free Sectors of Berlin” (France, Great Britian, and the USA.) That “alert” was given a “stand down” order shortly afterward.
But something else was afoot… Viet Nam. In 1965 the Gulf of Tonkin incident “suckered” us into action there. I was drafted in 1965 but was able to “by pass” the Draft Board and enlisted instead.
After post-Basic training and my advanced training, I was shipped out to Germany, where I remained for the duration of my enlistment. While my fellow enlistees were being processed out for their service in Viet Nam, I ended up spending time with (and falling in love with) the nation of Germany and its people.
I was finally discharged in 1968, but beginning in 1997, I began making trips back to “meine zweite Heimatsort” (my second “birthplace.)
Fulda has changed (as far as a US military presence) since very significant “draw-downs” there and in nearly every location where US troops had been stationed. After Reagan and the “Fall of the Wall,” Clinton presided over the “collection of the ‘Cold War Dividend’ as the troops were recalled. I served in the 3rd Division in Wuerzburg… It was sent back to my home state and garrisoned at Ft. Stewart, GA.
I think if you spent more time learning of “post-Unification Germany,” you would be disappointed with much of what you are likely to discover about the difference 50+ years has made… I can say, that “former East Germany” is an entirely different place! I recommend a visit there… and specifically to the area not too far from Fulda… the Harz Mountains region (I love the “mountains” of North Georgia… but they cannot compare with the beauty and history of “The Harz.”

When will people realize that we are not living in a republic but a democracy and it is the democracy which is the problem. Most people; 99%; do not know the difference. Wake up and learn.
